We must fight back against misinformation, hate, and oppression

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

This quotation is often mistakenly attributed to Edmund Burke, but he actually never said these words. The closest attribution according to Open Culture is philosopher John Stuart Mill who said in an 1867 address, “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”

"F" is for Fascism

Fascism was established in Italy by Benito Mussolini when he founded the National Fascist Party between 1919-1921. The word itself comes from the ancient Roman symbol of authority, fasces or fascio littoro. This is depicted by a group of rods tied around an axe. This could be used for corporal or capital punishment.

You can learn how to spot a fascist here.

How close are we?

Several years ago, the thought of the United States falling into a fascist state might have seemed unimaginable. However, the landscape has changed dramatically since 2016 and the election of Donald Trump. He and his administration have legitimized white supremacy, misogyny, anti-immigrant attitudes, and many other unsavory aspects of American society, while demonizing education, the media, and the public health system. No matter what people tell you, it can happen here. There are already states with fascist style leaders who have passed oppressive and draconian laws. We will get into detail on those later, but let's take a look at what the characteristics are of a society in danger of falling into fascism.

Fascism can thrive in a militaristic society. We are definitely one of those societies. As much as we complain about American imperialism, the American people still love the uniform. Governor DeSantis of Florida has talked about creating a citizen militia that would be under his control. America, and the right wing in particular, equates gun ownership with freedom. Thugs like Kyle Rittenhouse are lionized as "American patriots" and "heroes."

Fascists use liberalism as an excuse for fascism. They reject liberal democracies where elections are free and competitive, and where the powers of the government are kept separated. They also reject the notion that all people should have equal rights and protections under the law. They equate liberalism with decadence and call for stricter control of society in general.
Therefore, fascists prefer a totalitarian approach to government. One-party rule is the order of the day, led by your favorite dictator. In these times, the fascists' choice would be Donald Trump. They are ready for armed conflict at all times. Fascist nations isolate themselves, blaming globalism for all of its ills. Sound familiar? That's a common theme running through all of social media these days.

Essentially, fascists promise that tight controls on society will eliminate the decadence created by liberal Democracy and make America great again by returning it to its historical values. They call for national unity, and the need to weed out the 'undesirables' in society. Generally speaking, the 'undesirables' would be those who do not fit the mold: immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ and transgender citizens. Women must understand their traditional place in society. Nicholas Fuentes, the leader of America First, does not believe that women should have voting rights. We delve into America First in more detail later. There is also a rise in anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic behavior. Since the Trump administration continuously blamed China for COVID-19, calling it the Wuhan Flu and the China Flu, we also observe an increase in anti-Asian hatred.

Fascism rises when fear, uncertainty and doubt prevail. People are most likely to embrace fascism when they fear for their safety. COVID-19 is a perfect case in point. People are not only afraid of the virus itself, but they also fear the solution: Vaccines. This is due to the spread of lies and propaganda about the vaccines. They weren't tested properly. They are causing more deaths than the illness. Marjorie Taylor Greene compared the House COVID-19 restrictions to the Holocaust. RFK Jr. stated that Anne Frank had it better in Germany than the children here who have to deal with masks and vaccines during these difficult times.

What was unthinkable in the past, is no longer the unthinkable. It is our informed opinion that we are ripe for the picking at this time in history. We are not alone.

We must call fascism out by its name; not shy away from it

On September 1, 2022, President Biden delivered remarks on the danger posed to American Democracy by Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans

On September 1 in Philadelphia, Joe Biden took the bull by the horns and called out the GOP for what it is. The only mistake he made from our perspective is calling it "semi" fascist. The GOP's legislation and ideology is nothing more than full-on fascism.

While many hesitate to call it for what it is, including the news media, President Biden was not afraid, and we applaud him for that. You can read the full transcript of his remarks here.

The cowardly television news media did not carry the speech. One major newspaper criticized it as "partisan." We disagree. There is no stopping the fascist GOP without voting Democrat. Even many of the rational Republicans realize that by now.

Others understand that and believe the media must start calling it for what it is. They know Biden was right and that he has absolutely nothing to apologize for.

"But as I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise."
