"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

This quotation is often mistakenly attributed to Edmund Burke, but he actually never said these words. The closest attribution according to Open Culture is philosopher John Stuart Mill who said in an 1867 address, “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject.”

A Brief History of Fascism

Fascism was established in Italy by Benito Mussolini when he founded the National Fascist Party between 1919-1921. The word itself comes from the ancient Roman symbol of authority, fasces or fascio littoroThis is depicted by a group of rods tied around an axe. This could be used for corporal or capital punishment.

Totalitarian regimes establish complete political, social, and cultural control over their subjects, and are usually headed by a charismatic leader. Fascism is a form of right-wing totalitarianism which emphasizes the subordination of the individual to advance the interests of the state.

You can learn how to spot a fascist here.

Donald Trump and the extreme right have created the climate for fascism in America

Several years ago, the thought of the United States falling into a fascist state might have seemed unimaginable. However, the landscape has changed dramatically since 2016 and the election of Donald Trump. During his first regime, Trump legitimized white supremacy, misogyny, anti-immigrant attitudes, and many other unsavory aspects of American society, while demonizing education, the media, and the public health system. In 2020, he and his henchmen fomented 'The Big Lie' that the election was stolen by Joe Biden, aided and abetted by Fox News, and it resulted in a violent attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of presidential power and the overthrow of our government. Despite the fact that this was seen on television and in spite of the findings of the January 6 Commission, the American people reelected Donald Trump to a second term in 2024 knowing that version 2.0 would be much, much worse.

Fascism can thrive in a violent/militaristic society. We are definitely one of those societies.  America, and the right wing in particular, equates gun ownership with freedom. Mass shootings and gun deaths are a way of life here and, in spite of the fact that Americans want more gun control, GOP politics have prevented the passage of meaningful gun control legislation. Vigilante thugs like Kyle Rittenhouse and militias like The Proud Boys are lionized as "American patriots" and "heroes." Trump spent the better part of four years lionizing the J6 insurrectionists and, on day one, pardoned 1,500 of his thugs, returning them to society in spite of the fact that many of them had criminal records

Fascists use liberalism as an excuse to invoke fascism. They reject liberal democracies where elections are free and competitive, and where the powers of the government are kept separated. They also reject the notion that all people should have equal rights and protections under the law. They equate liberalism with decadence and call for stricter control of society in general. We certainly have seen that here in America since Donald Trump came down the golden escalator in 2015.

You can check off all of these characteristics as it stands right now in America.

Therefore, fascists prefer a totalitarian approach to government. One-party rule is the order of the day, led by your favorite dictator. In America, the fascists' choice is Donald Trump. As of this writing, we haven't even gotten to Trump's first 100 days of his second term, and he's floating a third term in defiance of the Constitution. Fascists do not care about Constitutional law, and fascists are ready for armed conflict at all times. Fascist nations isolate themselves, blaming globalism for all of their ills. Sound familiar? That's a common theme running through all of social media these days.

Essentially, fascists promise that tight controls on society will eliminate the decadence created by liberal Democracy and make America great again by returning it to its historical values. They call for national unity, and the need to weed out the 'undesirables' in society. Generally speaking, 'undesirables' would be those who do not fit the mold: immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ and transgender citizens, as well as the mentally and physically disabled. Women must be made to understand their traditional place in society, which is to reproduce and take care of their men. Misogyny is rampant and white males are the most fit to run society. There is also a rise in anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic behavior. Since the Trump administration continuously blamed China for COVID-19, calling it the Wuhan Flu and the China Flu,  there has been a sharp increase in anti-Asian hatred.

Fascism rises when fear, uncertainty and doubt prevail. People are most likely to embrace fascism when they fear for their safety. The current Trump administration characterizes all undocumented immigrants as criminals. Donald Trump has called Mexicans drug dealers, criminals and rapists. The COVID-19 pandemic is another event that was used by the right to instill fear. People were not only afraid of the virus itself, but they also feared the solution: Vaccines. This is due to the spread of lies and propaganda about the vaccines. They weren't tested properly. They are causing more deaths than the illness. They are injecting chips for tracking into our bodies. Marjorie Taylor Greene disgustingly compared the House COVID-19 restrictions to the Holocaust, while RFK Jr. (now the head of Health and Human Services under the second Trump regime) stated that Anne Frank had it better in Germany than the children here who have to deal with masks and vaccines during the pandemic.

What was once unthinkable is no longer unthinkable. It is reality. We have slipped into fascism very quickly under Trump's second term, and that is because he and his henchmen have moved quicker than anyone anticipated. It's called 'flooding the zone.' It is imperative that we stop this descent into madness so that we have a shot at recovering our democracy and strengthen its guardrails.

Fascism is no longer on our doorstep; it is in our government

On September 1, 2022, President Biden delivered remarks on the danger posed to American Democracy by Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. The media ignored it.

On September 1, 2022, in Philadelphia, Joe Biden took the bull by the horns and called out the GOP for what it is. He was still in the middle of his term, but the seeds were being sown by Trump himself and a complicit GOP, as they continued to foster the ridiculous the notion that the election was stolen by Biden. Trump continues to spread The Big Lie today.

The legacy news media played no small part in bring fascism to our doorstep as it remained more interested in courting Trump than telling the truth about the dangers he presented to America. You can read the full transcript of Joe Biden's remarks here.

The cowardly television news media did not carry Biden's speech. One major newspaper criticized it as "partisan." We disagreed then and we were right. Two months out from the midterms, the media continued to fail the American people, enabling  Trump and the GOP rather than exposing the danger they presented to America's democratic principles.

For the media, Trump and his GOP cohorts was a meal ticket to bigger Internet 'hits' and brand building. Corporate ownership of the media, which we warned about long ago, played its part in delivering Trump 2.0 and the resulting disaster we now face.

Gone are the old days when the Washington Post, brought down Richard Nixon, another president who ignored the rule of law. The legacy media is now useless to Americans.

"But as I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise."
